Even if you have alerted your lodging establishment that you will be traveling with a small child, the following is a list of "must-do's" upon entering your room or rental.  You can assemble your own "to go" child-proofing kit with masking or electrical tape, pipe cleaners and outlet covers.  Remember, this is by no means an exclusive list and child-proofing must always be supplemented with your close supervision.  We also recommend traveling with your own first aid kit.

One.  Anchor or remove any floor lamps.

Two.  If the television is in a cabinet, close the doors when it is not in use or if your child is on the move.

Three.  If the television is not in a cabinet or mounted to the wall, move it safely away from the edge of the television stand and consider having it removed from the room.

Four.  Cover outlets with electrical outlet covers or masking tape.  Tape any electric cords to the floor or baseboard, out of the reach of your child.

Five.  Using pipe cleaners or tape, secure cabinet doors and mini-bar doors such that they cannot be opened by your child.

Six.  Get down on your hands and knees and check the floor of your room (including under the bed) and the bathroom and pick up any small or dangerous objects the cleaning staff may have overlooked.

Seven.  Pad tub faucets with washcloths and secure with tape.

Eight.  Close and/or latch all toilet lids.

Nine.  Lock sliding glass doors.

Ten.  Inquire about balcony netting for any accessible balconies.

Eleven.  Remove any uncovered trash cans or place them out of your child's reach.

Twelve.  Remove any table cloths or placemats.

Thirteen.  Tie and secure any curtain cords such that they are out of your child's reach.
